The history of the mushroom
Cultivated Mushrooms People have known that mushrooms taste great for a long time. They have been cultivated in Asia since around the year 600. In Europe the first mushrooms were cultivated in the 17th century: the champignon.
Exclusive delicacy Champignon is the French word for mushrooms and funghi. The first mushrooms were discovered near Paris. Soon the champignon was known as an exclusive delicacy and commercial cultivation began. After it was discovered how well the mushrooms grew in a cool and moist environment, cultivation expanded to the grottos around Paris. It was still the 19th century before the mushroom arrived in the Netherlands.
Netherlands: Land of Mushrooms
Even in the Netherlands mushrooms were originally a luxury product. The real breakthrough only occurred after 1950, when a number of cultivators decided to produce compost together. The quality increased and the cost dropped. The mushroom was then able to grow into the affordable, tasty and popular vegetable that we know today. With 270 million kilos of mushrooms per year, the Netherlands has become the largest producer in Europe and takes third place on a global level. |
